Data is the central resource for innovation in many different fields. Data is coming from many different sources, is used in ever higher amounts and responsible for ever bigger parts of the behavior of software and systems. Hence, it is of paramount importance to properly handle data as an integral part of software engineering. Consequently, software engineers need software engineering processes, methods, models, languages, tools, and principles to build high quality software whose key artifact is data.
This lecture series will explore the new role of data in software engineering and the new possibilities it offers for software engineering. Important challenges arise from the current lack of understanding of machine learning algorithms and big data as well as from complex fields of application such as autonomous driving, industry 4.0 and adaptive systems.
